This is a dry inoculant, not a fertilizer — the goal is getting the granules into contact with soil and roots, not dissolving them in water. It's also a natural compost tea starter: the label rate turns a gallon of brew into a liquid you can water in anywhere.
What's Inside
A microbial workforce measured in colony-forming units rather than NPK, led by the bacteria: Bacillus subtilis and five other Bacillus and Paenibacillus species at 580-680 million cfu per pound each, plus two Streptomyces. These are the decomposers and nutrient cyclers — breaking down organic matter, converting locked-up nutrients into forms roots can take, and occupying the root zone so there's less room for the organisms you don't want. Two Trichoderma species reinforce that occupation, helping beneficial biology dominate the soil around roots.
Rounding out the blend, mycorrhizal fungi — including Rhizophagus intraradices, the species that partners with vegetables and most garden plants — colonize roots directly and extend their reach for water and phosphorus. There's no NPK by design: microbes aren't food for plants, they're the workforce that processes food. Soil that has both is what gardeners mean by "alive," and it's the difference between fertilizer feeding your plants and fertilizer leaching past them.

How do I use soil microbes in my garden?
At transplanting, sprinkle it on the roots and in the hole. For new soil, mix 4 Tbs per cubic foot as you fill. What do soil microbes actually do?
They run the soil's economy. Bacteria and Trichoderma break down organic matter, convert nutrients into root-available forms, and occupy the root zone so harmful organisms have less room to establish. The mycorrhizal fungi in the blend go a step further, colonizing roots and extending their reach for water and phosphorus. Sterile soil can hold nutrients; living soil is what moves them into plants.
Is this the same as fertilizer?
No — there's no NPK in it at all. Fertilizer is food; microbes are the workforce that processes food. Bagged soil and depleted beds usually lack the workforce, which is why heavy feeding sometimes produces weak results. Use this alongside your fertilizer and compost: the biology makes both more effective. If you only ever apply one thing, plants still need actual nutrients first.
How is this different from mycorrhizal fungi?
It's a broader blend with a different emphasis. Mycorrhizae form a root partnership — a targeted, powerful effect concentrated at the root. This product leads with bacteria and Trichoderma, the free-living organisms that improve the whole soil's nutrient cycling and balance, and includes mycorrhizae as part of the mix. Do the microbes survive in the bag, and how long do they last in soil?
The organisms are in dormant, stable forms measured in colony-forming units — they wake up with moisture and food in soil. Store the bag sealed, cool, and dry, out of direct sunlight, and they keep well. In the garden, populations establish and persist as long as conditions support them; tilling, fungicides, and long bare-soil periods knock them back, which is why the label includes a maintenance schedule.
When will I see results?
Biology works quietly at first. The earliest visible effects come through the plants over 4-8 weeks — transplants establishing faster, steadier growth, stronger response to your regular feeding. Soil-level change is cumulative: over a season of regular use with organic matter present, beds hold moisture better and work more easily. For the fastest distribution, brew it as compost tea and water it in.
