When your potatoes may benefit from feeding

  • During the active growing season, when new leaves, stems and fruit are forming
  • When plants have been growing in the same bed or container for several seasons
  • After heavy rain or frequent irrigation, which can carry nutrients below the root zone
  • For plants in containers, raised beds or sandy soils that hold few nutrients
  • From transplanting through harvest, as plants put on growth quickly

Plant appearance can also be affected by light, watering, roots, temperature, and other growing conditions, so feeding is one part of overall plant care.

How to care for potatoes

Light

Potatoes want six to eight hours of direct sun. In shade you get leafy vines and small tubers, so choose the most open bed or a large container on a bright patio.

Water

Give about one to two inches of water a week and keep moisture even, especially once your potatoes flower and tubers size up. Wet and dry swings cause cracks and knobby potatoes.

Soil

Loose, well draining soil on the acidic side, about pH 5.0 to 6.0, dug deep. Skip fresh manure and heavy clay, which bring scabby skins and misshapen tubers.

Hilling

Mound soil or straw around the stems as they grow, about six inches at a time. Covering keeps developing tubers in the dark, since any exposed to light turn green.

Harvest

Dig new potatoes a couple of weeks after flowering. For storage potatoes, wait until your vines yellow and die back, then lift them and cure them in a dark, airy spot.

Feeding

Feed Potato Fertilizer with your watering every two to three weeks, from the time the shoots are a few inches tall until your vines start to yellow and die back.
