Pitcher Plant Food

Standard fertilizer can. Carnivorous plants evolved in nutrient-poor bogs, and their roots are extremely sensitive to the salts in normal plant food. Pitcher Plant Food is formulated for that sensitivity: a very low 1-0.5-3 ratio, all of the nitrogen in nitrate form to keep salt exposure to a minimum, and a heavy dilution of a quarter teaspoon per quart of water. Fed at that rate and no stronger, it supplies just enough nutrition to support growth and larger, better-colored pitchers within what bog-native roots tolerate.

Both. Mix Pitcher Plant Food at a quarter teaspoon per quart of water, then water the soil evenly and, if you like, fill the pitchers about half full with the same solution. Feeding into the pitchers mirrors how Nepenthes and Sarracenia naturally take in nutrients from captured prey, and the mix is dilute enough for that. Apply every 1 to 2 weeks in spring and summer and every 4 weeks in fall and winter; an optional misting of the foliage two to four times a month uses the same dilution.

Distilled water, rainwater or reverse-osmosis water. Carnivorous plants are sensitive to the dissolved minerals in tap water, and hard water builds up in the media over time in a way pitcher plants can’t tolerate. Pitcher Plant Food supplies what your pitcher plant needs in a dilute, controlled form; mixing it into pure water keeps mineral buildup from undoing the benefit of feeding and matches the low-mineral conditions these plants come from.

Not necessarily. Pitcher Plant Food supplies the nitrogen, potassium and micronutrients a plant would otherwise take from prey, so a healthy plant does well on it alone, and that matters most for indoor plants that catch little on their own. If your plant catches insects too, that’s fine; it’s how your pitcher plant naturally feeds. Just keep the fertilizer at the quarter teaspoon per quart rate rather than adding more on top of what it catches.

Pitcher plants are the primary use: Nepenthes, the tropical pitchers, and Sarracenia, the North American pitchers. At this rate Pitcher Plant Food also suits Venus flytraps, sundews and butterworts, since all of them are bog natives with the same sensitivity to fertilizer salts, and the quarter teaspoon per quart dilution that protects pitcher plants protects them too. For flytraps and sundews, water the soil rather than feeding into the traps.

New growth and better pitcher color usually show within a few weeks of regular feeding during the growing season, since all the nitrogen in Pitcher Plant Food is nitrate and available to your pitcher plant right away, whether it goes into the soil or the pitchers. Larger, more vigorous pitchers develop over time as your plant builds strength, and the change is most noticeable on plants that have been in the same nutrient-poor media for a long while. Growth slows in winter, so feed only every 4 weeks then.
