How to Use Orchid Root Supplement
| Method | Amount | How Often |
|---|---|---|
| Watering can / dunk method (spring & summer) | 1 tsp per quart (32 oz) of water | Apply every 1-2 weeks |
| Watering can / dunk method (fall & winter) | Same dilution | Apply every 4 weeks |
Works with the dunk-and-drain watering most orchids get — mix it into the water you soak with. Designed to pair with all TPS orchid products, not replace them.
What's Inside
Four ingredients, each aimed at the roots rather than the leaves. Sea kelp supplies natural growth-promoting compounds that support new root tips — the pale green growing points that tell you an orchid is actually establishing. A 10% probiotic houseplant blend adds beneficial microbes that improve nutrient availability and help crowd out the rot organisms that thrive in a broken-down, soggy bark mix.
Plant-derived surfactants solve a problem specific to how orchids are potted: water tends to slide off dry bark and velamen without soaking in, so a quick watering can leave roots nearly as dry as before. Surfactants break that surface tension so moisture and nutrients reach the root surface, and plant-derived fulvic acid helps carry minerals into the root. There's no NPK here by design — this supplements your orchid fertilizer rather than competing with it.
Made For
Phalaenopsis (moth orchids), Dendrobium, Cattleya, Oncidium, Vanda, and Paphiopedilum — potted in bark, sphagnum moss, or mounted — especially orchids being repotted, recovering from root rot, or pushing new growth after blooming.
Problems It Solves
- Shriveled, papery roots instead of plump silvery-green ones
- Water running straight through the bark without soaking in
- An orchid that lost roots to rot and needs to rebuild
- Weak recovery after repotting or dividing
FAQs
How often should I use root supplement on orchids?
Add 1 tsp per quart (32 oz) of water and apply every 1-2 weeks in spring and summer, dropping to every 4 weeks in fall and winter. It fits either watering style: pour it through with a watering can, or mix it into the water you dunk the pot in and let the roots soak. No separate routine needed — it rides along with normal watering.
Can this save an orchid with root rot?
It helps with the rebuilding, but the rescue steps come first: unpot the orchid, trim mushy brown roots back to firm tissue, and repot in fresh bark — rot is caused by a soggy, broken-down mix, and no product fixes that while the old medium stays. From there, the kelp compounds support new root growth and the probiotics help healthy microbes establish in the fresh mix.
Is this a fertilizer? Do I still need orchid food?
It's a supplement, not a fertilizer — there's no NPK in it. Kelp, probiotics, and surfactants build root health and improve how well roots take up water and nutrients, but your orchid still needs actual nutrition from an orchid fertilizer. The two are designed to work together: this makes the roots better at using what the fertilizer delivers.
Why are my orchid's roots turning silver and shriveled?
Silvery roots are normal — velamen turns silver-grey when dry and green when watered. Shriveled and papery is the warning sign: the orchid isn't absorbing enough water, either from underwatering or from bark so old and dry it repels moisture. Soak longer when you water, and the surfactants here help water actually penetrate. If the mix is years old, repot.
Do I use this on the roots or the leaves?
The roots — everything in the formula targets the root zone. Mix it into your watering or dunk water so it reaches the velamen and the bark around it. There's no need to spray leaves, and with orchids you generally want to keep water out of the crown anyway, since water sitting there invites rot. Aerial roots reaching out of the pot benefit from the dunk method too.
When will I see results?
Look at the roots, not the flowers. New root tips — bright green growing points on the ends of roots — are the first sign, typically within 3-6 weeks of regular use during the growing season. Fuller, plumper velamen follows. The payoff above the pot comes on the orchid's own schedule: stronger roots support the next growth cycle and bloom spike rather than changing this one.
