When extra nitrogen may be helpful

  • Alongside a regular fertilizer that supplies little or no nitrogen
  • For plants in soilless mixes or hydroponics, where nitrogen is not supplied by the soil
  • When a soil test shows nitrogen is low
  • For crops that use a lot of nitrogen, such as leafy greens, corn, lawns and heavy-feeding annuals
  • During active growth, when demand for nitrogen is highest

Light, watering, roots, temperature and pH shape how a plant looks, and shortfalls of different nutrients can resemble one another, so look at the whole plant, or test the soil, before adding nitrogen.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I use nitrogen fertilizer?

Nitrogen Fertilizer is a supplement, and the schedule follows the growing season. In spring and summer, apply once weekly at 2 teaspoons per gallon through a watering can or a hose-end sprayer on the 2 teaspoon setting. In fall and winter, ease back to every 4–8 weeks. Because the formula is straight 15-0-0 nitrogen with no phosphorus or potassium, use it alongside your regular complete feed rather than in place of it. Excess nitrogen brings problems of its own, so keep to the rate rather than adding more.

Why is my plant or lawn turning pale or yellow?

Uniform yellowing or pale green that starts on the oldest, lowest leaves is the classic sign of nitrogen shortage, and Nitrogen Fertilizer is made to correct it. Not all yellowing is nitrogen, though. Yellowing between the veins with green veins left behind points to magnesium or iron, and whole-plant yellowing with wilting often means overwatering. Nitrogen fixes the pale, hungry look of a plant or lawn that’s simply short on it; if the pattern looks different, the cause is likely different too.

Will nitrogen fertilizer burn my lawn or plants?

Nitrogen Fertilizer is a concentrate, and dilution is what matters here. Fertilizer burn happens when concentrated salts sit against the roots: too much product in too little water, or granules piled on dry turf. The three-source blend helps, since the ammoniacal and urea fractions release more slowly than pure nitrate, giving a steadier feed. Mixed at 2 teaspoons per gallon, watered in, and kept off drought-stressed or bone-dry plants, the nitrogen arrives at a strength roots take up as they water. Past a point, more nitrogen only pushes soft, weak growth.

What does 15-0-0 mean, and why no phosphorus or potassium?

The three numbers are the percentages of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Nitrogen Fertilizer is 15-0-0: 15% nitrogen and none of the other two, which makes it a targeted supplement rather than a complete fertilizer. It’s built for situations where a plant needs nitrogen specifically, such as correcting a deficiency, greening a lawn or feeding leafy growth, without adding phosphorus or potassium the soil may already hold. Pair it with a balanced fertilizer that covers those two so your plant's full needs are met.

When will I see results?

The nitrate portion works within days, so pale plants and lawns often green up noticeably within a week. The ammoniacal fraction converts in the soil over a week or two, and the 10% urea fraction feeds gradually as it breaks down, so Nitrogen Fertilizer carries your plant between applications rather than surging and fading. Leaves that were severely yellowed may not fully recover, but new growth comes in greener and stronger. On lawns, the green-up is usually the fastest and most visible response.
