When your lawn may benefit from feeding

  • At the start of the growing season, as your lawn greens up
  • After frequent mowing, which removes nutrients with every clipping
  • After heavy rain or regular irrigation on sandy or thin soils
  • Several weeks after seeding or sodding, once new grass is established
  • When growth has slowed mid-season despite regular watering

Lawn color and density also depend on mowing height, watering, soil compaction and sunlight, so feeding is one part of overall lawn care.

How to care for your lawn

Light

Most turf wants six to eight hours of sun. Fine fescue handles shade best, while bermudagrass and zoysiagrass thin out badly anywhere short of full sun.

Water

About an inch a week including rain, given in one or two deep soakings rather than daily sprinkles. Water early so the blades dry before nightfall.

Soil

Aim for pH 6.0 to 7.0 and relieve compaction by core aerating once a year. Topdressing with a thin layer of compost improves thin, sandy ground.

Mowing

Mow high: 3 to 4 inches for fescue and bluegrass, 1 to 2 inches for bermudagrass and zoysiagrass. Never take more than a third of the blade at once.

Feeding

Feed cool-season grasses in spring and fall and warm-season grasses through summer. Apply Lawn Fertilizer every one to two weeks in the growing season with a hose-end sprayer.

Temperature

Cool-season grasses grow best at 60 to 75F, warm-season grasses at 80 to 95F. Both slow outside that range, so time seeding and repairs around it.
