When your fig tree may benefit from feeding

  • During the active growing season, when new shoots, leaves, flowers or fruit are forming
  • When plants have been growing in the same bed or container for several seasons
  • After heavy rain or frequent irrigation, which can carry nutrients below the root zone
  • For plants in containers, raised beds or sandy soils that hold few nutrients
  • From flowering through fruit set, when demand for nutrients is highest

Plant appearance can also be affected by light, watering, roots, temperature, and other growing conditions, so feeding is one part of overall plant care.

How to care for a fig tree

Light

Full sun, at least six to eight hours a day. Figs grow leggy and ripen fruit poorly in shade, so give potted trees the sunniest spot you have.

Water

Water deeply and regularly through the growing season. Pots can need water daily in summer heat, and uneven watering makes fruit split or drop before it ripens.

Soil

Well-drained soil, pH 6.0 to 7.5. Figs handle a wide range of ground but not standing water, so raise the planting spot if your soil stays wet.

Feeding

Apply Granular Fig Tree Fertilizer to the soil around your tree in early spring as growth starts, water it in, and repeat through the growing season as the tree feeds gradually.

Pruning

Prune in late winter while your tree is dormant. Open the center, take out crossing wood, and hold the tree to a height you can actually pick from.

Harvest

Pick figs when they soften and the neck bends so the fruit hangs down. Figs do not ripen after picking, so leave firm, upright fruit on your tree.
