When should I apply 5-10-10?

5-10-10 is a liquid for the stage when you want roots, flowers and fruit rather than leaf: phosphorus and potassium at double the nitrogen, with 1% sulfur and a light dose of iron, manganese and copper. Apply every two to four weeks in spring and summer and every four to eight weeks in fall and winter, at 1 to 2 ounces per gallon of feedwater.

Is this slow-release or fast-acting?

Fast-acting. It’s a liquid, so the phosphorus and potassium are dissolved when they reach the soil rather than locked in a granule that breaks down over months. That’s useful with phosphorus in particular, which moves slowly in soil; delivering it in solution at the root zone, on a repeating schedule, gets it to your plant while it’s flowering and fruiting.

How much do I mix, and how far does it go?

1 to 2 ounces per gallon of feedwater; one ounce covers about 50 square feet, so measure the bed and mix for the area rather than dosing per plant. Use the lower end for a light maintenance feed and the higher end for a bed in full flower or fruit.

What do the 5-10-10 numbers mean?

5% nitrogen, 10% phosphorus, 10% potassium. Phosphorus and potassium are double the nitrogen, where a balanced feed would have all three level. Nitrogen drives leaf and stem growth; phosphorus supports root development and flowering; potassium supports fruit quality and your plant's general resilience. So this formula holds back the leafy push and puts the emphasis on roots, blooms and fruit. It also carries 1% sulfur.

Can I use it through a hose-end sprayer?

Yes. 5-10-10 goes on three ways: a watering can, a backpack or foliar sprayer, or a hose-end sprayer set to the 1–2 ounce setting. The rate is the same whichever you use; the hose-end is simply the quickest way to cover a large bed.

Will this burn my plants?

5-10-10 is a dilute liquid feed, and dilution is what matters here. Fertilizer burn happens when concentrated salts sit against the roots: too much product in too little water, or granules piled at the base of a plant. Mixed at 1 to 2 ounces per gallon and applied every two to four weeks in season, the nutrients arrive in solution at a strength the roots take up as they water. Keep to that mix and water it in as part of a normal watering.
